Pollen Tube Growth Promoters from the Style of Rhododentb ' on mueronatum G

Compounds that promoted the growth of pollen tubes were isolated from the style of Rhedodendeon muerenatum and were identified as azalein, (+)-catechin, and (-)epicatechin. Among these compounds, 50-100ppm of (+)-catechin or (-)-epicatechin increased the growth of pollen tubes in thmetlia japoniea, R. mueronatum, Slyrax japoniea, and Pinus densij7bra by 16-20%. These compounds had no significant effects on the growth of pollen tubes in Lutum auratum and IN2ireissus pseudo-narcissus. Among the phenolic compounds with similar chemical structures as the promoters, catecholand pyrogallol-type compounds had the aetiyity and the latter types were more effectiye. As ct-tocopherol also showed growth promoting actiyity, it was thought that the antioxidatiye activity of the phenolic compounds was respensible for the prometion of the pollen tube growth.
